The many lives of I Am Enjolee
Although Enjolee Williams was raised in what she describes as a, “singing family” her path to realizing her own musical aspirations would take her on a journey–from college, the military to a career in teaching–that would prove her true destiney would be to change the world with her angelic vocals.
“Your gift will wake you up in the middle of the night,” says Enjolee.
The aspect of making a living wage off of doing what she loved did not seem tangible to the singer who goes by the moniker, I Am Enjolee. In a shocking move, after graduating from college she enlisted into the military.
“Believe it or not joining the military was me giving up on music. There was security in the army. I know that when I swear in I will get this paycheck. Yes, I am signing over my life and could possibly sacrifice myself for my country but I know that I will never want for food, all my bills will be paid, I will have a place to stay, I will be alright.”
While enlisted she would be presented with an opportunity that would change the capacity in which she served while also changing the trajectory of her future.
“I was cleaning up the barracks and got a message from my sergeant; it wasn’t a message it was more like, ‘WILLIAMS! BRING YOURSELF IN HERE!’ So I thought I was in trouble. There was an office full of other sergeants and I was terrified but he had me sing.”
That impromptu audition would force Enjolee right back into the dream she’d deferred.
“They said we’re going to do your application for army entertainment. In that moment, I was like, I tried to run away from music. It was a painful situation because I gave up, so for me to now be in this situation where I was committed to wearing that uniform and doing everything that uniform entailed, now again music is in my face.”
She took full advantage of the opportunity, traveling the world using her gift to inspire and uplift.
“That experience changed my life because I never even fathomed the thought of me living on my dream.”
Enjolee credits her unique experiences within as well as outside of the military with getting her to where she is now.
“I know the value of hard work. I know the value of not having any money in my bank account and then having money in my bank account. I know so much more than I would have had I just went one path but I’ve lived many lives.”
Her current focus is directing all of her energy into taking full advantage of every opportunity her gift presents.
“I’m looking forward to all the blessings that could be opened up if I put my energy into it. I put my energy into being an educator, I put my energy into the military, I’ve not put my energy into music full time but that’s my time now. I’m living this new life now.”
Just as she was driven to obtain her degree, join the military and become an educator, she has a new drive.
“What is driving me now is my music my people and how I can contribute to my community with my gift. You can have a gift and a purpose, everybody has a gift but what’s your purpose? I’ve now found my purpose.”
