The Beautiful Struggle of Breona Micole

Breona Micole’s latest release ‘Burning Bridges’ off of her first album ‘Metanoia’—which is defined as; The change in one’s way of life resulting from penitence or spiritual conversion—was written at a phase in the singer’s life when she was facing her own metanoia of sorts.

“At the time, I was in school taking classes at Texas Southern and I was in between the phase of trying to work, go to school and do music. Because so much was going on, I kind of took a break from it.”

A strong believer in the power of positive energy, the singer says it’s essential to gaining inspiration, “Energy is everything to me. I have always been the type of person who can pick up on people’s energy, I can feel it. I’d rather be surrounded by positive people with great energy who all share the same vision.”

For that shared energy and vision,  she would enlist Ben Wade to produce one track and B.R.U.C.E W.A.I.N.E for the remainder of her ‘Metanoia’ project.

“Believe it or not, even though its only seven songs, I started writing it about a year and a half before I released it, and a lot of the earlier songs like ‘Collision’ and ‘Burning Bridges’ came during a period of time when I was going through a lot of phases. I found inspiration while I was going through those phases and that’s how a lot of the songs were written.”

After stepping away from her project for nearly three months she was able to clear her mind enough to tap back in to her true creative process which the song-writer says is, “What I feel at that moment” other times, “I’ll find inspiration out of nowhere. I just pretty much write about what I go through. Inspiration for me just falls out the sky sometimes, I just call it a blessing.”

Breona has spread her creative inspiration beyond her own work; she’s also credited as co-producer on the intro track ‘SunRise’ from H-Town Rap Battle Champion Buddieroe’s latest project, ‘SunRise Over Briargate.’

Breona says that a reminder of a promise she made to herself after finishing her project continues to motivate her. “I tell myself that every day you should be progressing. Whether that’s writing a song or writing a script or whatever. You need to be doing something.”

She credits that drive to a few things, “My drive is to not only make a better life for myself but to tell my story and inspire people. I always want to leave a piece of myself for the world to see even when I’m dead and gone.”

One of the biggest struggles Breona would have to endure to find that voice to tell her story would be learning herself to love and accept her own vocal talent.

“My voice to me used to be very annoying,” she admits, “For so long I didn’t believe that I was great.”

She credits self-belief with leading her to finding appreciation for her talents.

“You have to believe in yourself, people are going to believe in you but you have to believe in yourself first. You have to believe that you can do whatever it is you were set on this earth to do. You have to believe in what you do and in your craft.”

“I got to a point to where I said ‘This is what God gave me even if I don’t like where I’m at now, I understand that I have to work on that and I have to constantly water my seeds every day.’ Now I love my voice because I realized it’s something that God gave to me and I started believing in my powers and I started believing in my gifts and abilities.”

When asked what advice she would give to fellow creatives trying to expose the world to their talent she says, “The bible says it best: Your gifts will make room for you. So, once you feed into your gift and you believe that you can do it, you will be amazed at what kind of doors he will open for you.”

Breona’s next stop will be performing at the fourth annual Women Fuck Shit Up Fest (WFSU) in February.
